Heritage Book
Recording the Stories of Our Norwegian Statehood Pioneers
One of the most important goals of the Norwegian Statehood Pioneer Project is to preserve the stories of the early days of our Norwegian ancestors in Minnesota. We are not the first, nor will we be the last, program that publishes such a volume. We hope that it will be unique in its focus on that specific period of time, offering a look at the early communities and the lives of the Norwegians who lived in Minnesota in 1858. We expect that it will be the only published record of the Sesquicentennial Celebration.
The book will have three parts:
-
Stories contributed by participating organizations and other individuals about the communities and Norwegian pioneers and their lives, specifically during during the 1850's
-
Biographies gathered from applications for recognition that briefly tell the life stories of Norwegians who lived in Minnesota in 1858 and a list of Century Pioneers who lived in Minnesota prior to 1908.
-
A recap of the October Celebration, with photos and text that underscore the on-going value placed on the contributions of Norwegian-Minnesotans to the state's culture and history.
We're
honored that Dr. Verlyn Anderson, Professor Emeritus, Concordia College,
Moorhead MN and recent winner of the St. Olav Medal, will provide the
foreword for this special volume.
The books will be available for purchase through participating organizations and on this website by late November, 2008. It should be a great companion to a Pioneer Plaque and a great Christmas gift for those with Minnesota roots - including yourself!
